Responders Retreat at Camp Luther

Fall of 2022, I had the opportunity to attend the Responders Retreat at Camp Luther near Rhinelander, Wisconsin. For the first time, following a 30 year career with the Chicago Fire Department, and being retired for 12 years; I became aware of what PTSD was doing and had been doing to me and my family. I wished that the information regarding chronic exposure to trauma and its impact on the first responder was available earlier in my career. Depression, anxiety, and fear are common emotions experienced by first responders and should not be ignored; but managed. Liz and the staff created an environment that promoted healing and reconnecting with the most important person that needs my help...me! Any First Responder that has experienced any trauma must know how to manage it, or it will drive them. The retreat provides a safe place for responders to be vulnerable and thereby grow. I would go again in a heartbeat.

Lodging - cabins were fantastic! all the comforts of home. Everything was in working order. I love the fireplace!

Food - Where do I start? Fantastic! Portion size, taste were great. If you left hungry, it was your own fault.

Camp staff - to be welcomed by so many camp staff was both corforting and reassuring. I knew if I needed something (questions was answered, maybe an item I needed) it would be taken care of with a smile.

Retreat itself - I want to say thank you to Liz, Joe and Jon for your compassion and commitment to this program. I feel it is critical to give first responders the love and understanding that you have shown this week. When it starteed we were strangers with a common issue(s). By Friday, we wer brothers and sisters in the fight t get more awareness for PTSD related issues and this program.

Camp Environment - Beautiful location. I loved my morning jog/walk and exploring the grounds. This is the most outdoor hiking, exploring I have done since a child on family vacation. Scenery was incredible.

Dan - His presentation was amazing. He is a great speaker and presented his material well. I think continuing to show his wife's video is important.

Cindy - Amazing energy and positivity. Alternative therapies and the change to experience them was something I enjoyed. I feel its important to keep an open mind to these types of therapies. I like to say what works for me may not work for you and vice versa.

Overall and positive and uplifting experience. I am looking forward to next year! Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart. I wear the serenity prayer and the following statement around my neck on dog tags.

Never underestimate the difference you made and the lives you touched.

Sincerely and with Love,

EBB
